Major changes to the Supervisa took effect on July 4, 2022. According to the official website of Immigration Canada, ew changes include:
1) The length of stay for super visa holders per entry to Canada will be increased to five years.
2) Super visa holders have the option to apply to extend their stay within Canada by up to two years. This means current super visa holders can now stay in Canada for up to seven consecutive years.
3) The Minister of Immigration of Canada will have the power to designate international health insurance companies to provide insurance for super visa applicants in the future.
The super visa is an alternative to the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP), which provides permanent residency to its applicants and is very popular, but the number of applicants far exceeds the number of applicants expected to be approved.
Although the super visa has made the changes mentioned above, there are still some things that visa holders need to pay attention to:
1) Benefit from the new policy to stay for 5 years if the application is submitted and approved on or after July 4;
2) If approved before July 4, the holder will benefit from the new policy as long as the holder enters Canada after July 4;
3) If the holder entered Canada before July 4, he is not currently eligible for the new policy and cannot stay for 5 years. The length of stay remains unchanged according to the period granted by the border officer at the time of entry, i.e. a maximum stay of 2 years if granted at the time of 2 years.
4) If people wants benefit from the current policy, they will need to leave Canada before the end of the current period of stay and re-enter after July 4. Border officials will review eligibility and, if still met, grant a 5-year stay. Alternatively, the holder can apply for an extension of stay within Canada for a maximum of 2 years.
