The University of British Columbia, referred to as UBC, was established in 1908. It was formerly known as McGill University British Columbia College or McGill University College of British Columbia. It is the oldest university in British Columbia and became independent in 1915. The University of British Columbia, and McGill University, University of Toronto and Queen's University form Canada's Ivy League. It is one of the founding members of Universitas 21 (the international association of universities), which enjoys an international reputation for both teaching and research. The school started out as a research cooperative institution, and then gradually developed into a comprehensive university. In the past 100 years, UBC has developed into a prestigious institution of higher learning in Canada and one of the world's famous comprehensive universities. Its excellent academic level and wide range of professional settings make it a top university that many students yearn for. In the entire North America, UBC ranks third in the number of companies established based on scientific research results, after MIT and Stanford University. UBC University has been ranked second in the comprehensive ranking of doctoral universities by the authoritative magazine "Maclean" in Canada for many consecutive years. The school is one of the most difficult universities in Canada to apply for.
