Durham University, located in Durham, England, is a public research university, a member of the Russell University Group, the Coimbra Group, the Global University Research Institute Alliance and the N8 University Alliance. The universities are also traditional colleges, collectively known as "Doxbridge". Durham University covers an area of 227.8 hectares, which includes 1 UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1 ancient monument, 5 listed buildings with first-class heritage protection, 68 listed second-class heritage buildings and 44.9 hectares of forest. The entire school is divided into two campuses: Durham City Campus and Queen's Campus in Stockton. The two campuses can be commuted frequently via buses running 24/7. Durham University began teaching and research work in 1072. In 1832, Durham University was formally established, was awarded the Royal Charter in 1837, and was named one of the World Heritage Sites by the United Nations in 1986.
