1. IELTS test

 

Academic:

Applicable to: apply for undergraduate and postgraduate degree or above to study abroad.

Academic exams test a candidate's English proficiency and assess whether a candidate's English proficiency meets the requirements for university or postgraduate study. Admission to a university or graduate program should be based on the results of these tests.

 

General:

Applicable to: immigration applications from English-speaking countries (such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom), or applications for training and non-diploma courses.

General exams focus on the assessment of basic language skills for survival in a wider social and educational environment, not the language skills required for academic research.

 

2. IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration)

Academic:

Applicable to: Intensive English courses/preparatory courses/language courses/other courses below the undergraduate level in all UK institutions to apply for and obtain professional qualifications.

 

The IELTS test for UK visas and immigration can also be used for study abroad (only if the institution specifically requires applicants to provide IELTS for UK visas and immigration)

 

General:

Applicable to: Immigration applications from English-speaking countries, or applications for training and non-diploma courses.

3. IELTS for Life Skills

Level A1: Applies to: Spouse, Visiting Family UK Visa Application

Level A1 meet CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standards and are equivalent to entry level 1 English as defined in the UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

 

Level B1: Applies to: Naturalization, Permanent Residency UK Visa Application

Level B1 meet CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standards and are equivalent to entry level 3 English as defined in the UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
